On the air
Listen first. Key up, wait a beat, then talk. Say your callsign every 10 minutes and at the end. First call: "N0CALL listening." Radio a few inches from your mouth, normal voice.
The rules (US)
Listening: anyone, anything. Transmit on 2 m / 70 cm: ham license. Technician: 35 questions, 26 to pass. Never transmit on FRS, GMRS or MURS: the K5's FCC record covers receive only. No encryption: keep SCR off.
When something's wrong
Repeater silent check SFT-D, OFFSET, T-CTCS
